The Water Resource Bureau of the Taichung City Government held a local briefing on the design phase of the Huludun Canal Water Environment Improvement Project (Sanmin Road to Zhongzheng Road) at the five villages’ joint activity center in Fengyuan District today (6th). Attendees included local councilors, village chiefs, and concerned citizens. Everyone gathered to gain a better understanding of this significant plan. The bureau hopes the design can be perfect and closer to the citizens through mutual communication and exchange.
According to the Water Resource Bureau, the Huludun Canal, often referred to as the "mother river" of Fengyuan, boasts a rich history spanning 300 years, making it one of central Taiwan's oldest irrigation channels. People have gradually covered the canal way in the urban area as a parking lot with the changes of the times and the development of urbanization. To improve this phenomenon, the city government has promoted the uncapped construction plan of the Huludun Canal and has completed the construction work of about 300 meters from Sanfeng Road to Sanmin Road. The uncapped construction of Sanmin Road to Zhongzheng Road is about to begin, extending the opening range of the Huludun Canal, with a length of approximately 400 meters and a budget of about NTD 160 million. The central and local governments jointly bear the construction and expect to complete the detailed design by the end of this year.
The Water Resource Bureau elaborated that this enhancement plan extends beyond merely securing the flood control and drainage capacities of the Huludun Canal. At the same time, it is necessary to fully leverage its historical value and commercial district characteristics while focusing on the three core concepts of "Ancient Canal," "Temple-court Culture," and "Pastry Culture." The bureau plans to use these elements as the primary axis of spatial development to create a visually appealing water environment in Huludun Canal.
The Water Resource Bureau has declared that the ongoing execution of the Huludun Canal Water Environment Improvement Project signifies the collective endeavors and unwavering resolve of the city government to collaboratively construct a visually pleasing and inhabitable urban center. In the future, the city government will continue with all parties to protect water resources, improve the water environment, and lead by water culture to create a more prosperous and sustainable future, achieving harmonious integration of water environment optimization and urban development.
