A makeover for Ruanpizai River: Water environment to be improved for a refreshed waterfront cityscape

Section 3 - Render of the project
Ruanpizai River, which flows through Fengyuan and Shengang Districts in Taichung City, has seen partial improvements, including some sewage interception and landscape enhancements. However, the upstream main river channel suffers from low flow, resulting in a dry riverbed, inflow of domestic sewage, along with issues like aging and deteriorating embankments, overgrown vegetation, and disconnected park pathways. These issues have prevented the water environment from maintaining its original state. As a result, the Taichung City Government secured funding through the National Water Environment Improvement Program, receiving NT$117 million from the Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and raising NT$33 million on its own, making a total of NT$150 million for the Ruanpizai River Water Environment Improvement Project. This project began in October 2022 and is expected to be completed by June this year.
Director Fan Shih-i of the Water Resources Bureau noted that the improvement project spans from Section 8 of Fengyuan Boulevard to Fengli Bridge on Sanfeng Road, covering approximately 1,500 meters. It involves constructing ecological stone embankments, creating a winding river image, and improving sewage interception. The project also includes pedestrian walkways and diverse plantings. Utilizing nature-friendly and ecological engineering techniques, the project aims to restore the picturesque waterfront of Fengyuan, reviving the local riverside heritage of a prosperous Fengyuan and presenting a refreshed waterfront cityscape.
The Water Resources Bureau noted that the Ruanpizai River Water Environment Improvement Project is focusing on three main areas: water purification, aquatic landscape, and hydraulic safety. These ongoing efforts aim to comprehensively create a vibrant and livable environment in the park, achieving goals such as improving water quality, maintaining the continuity of the riverbank space, and increasing green and blue spaces along the waterfront. This project will make the area a prime spot for leisure and recreation in Taichung. Let’s patiently wait for its completion. (4/5*10)* Water Resources Bureau
