The Taichung City Government's Water Resources Bureau was honored with two silver awards in the “Environmental Sustainability - SDG6” category at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Sustainability Action Awards. The Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy Research organized the awards ceremony today (8th) at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1. This recognition highlights the bureau's exceptional efforts in promoting the sustainable development of the Fazi River's water environment.
The Water Resources Bureau highlighted that Fazi River, often referred to as Taichung City's “Greeting River,” is a key landmark for the world to see. The bureau's sustainability action plan involves improving the Fazih River basin's water quality by implementing a sewer line connection initiative that expands sewer networks. This allows domestic wastewater to be directed to the Wenshan Water Resource Recycling Center for treatment. In pollution-prone upstream areas like Lincuo drainage and the Dongda, Huilai, and Chaoyang rivers, wastewater from residential and commercial zones is intercepted and redirected to constructed wetlands via pipelines. Additionally, through the Fazih River Ecological Green Corridor project, a green corridor will be created to connect the upstream and downstream areas of the Fazih River, linking upstream and downstream regions to enhance waterfront accessibility.
According to the Water Resources Bureau, the city government has set up the Dongda River Water Culture and Environmental Education Center and the Fazih River Water Culture and Environmental Education Center near the Fazih River. These centers serve as key sites for ecological education, enriching the environmental learning areas along the river. The overarching action plan aims to transform the Fazih River into a landmark for Greater Taichung.
Director Fan Shih-I of the Water Resources Bureau elaborated that the city government is dedicated to advancing various water-related projects, such as the construction of flood control facilities, water environment enhancement, wastewater treatment, and water resource reuse. In an effort to improve the living environment for residents and support the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," the bureau is continuously working on enhancing Taichung's water and green spaces. By prioritizing wastewater treatment, they aim to reduce river pollution, ensure river embankment safety, and revive river ecosystems. Additionally, they are establishing water culture and environmental education centers to provide excellent environmental education venues, aligning with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
