Village Chief Liu noted that since residents were used to their old living conditions, there was considerable opposition during the initial stages of construction. However, with persistent outreach and explanations from the Water Resources Bureau, the village chief, and the construction team, residents gradually noticed significant improvements in their environment after connecting household pipelines to sanitary sewers. As a result, they shifted from opposition to support, recognizing the benefits of the project.
Neighborhood chiefs and community members from various areas, including Heyuan Village in Xitun District, Ren’ai Village, Shuinan Village, Songzhu Village, and Simin Village in Beitun District, as well as Gongzheng Village in West District, participated in the guided tour showcasing the results of the sewer connection project. Deputy Director of the Water Resources Bureau, Han Nai-bin, noted that traditional septic tank systems release harmful gases like methane and hydrogen sulfide during wastewater decomposition, posing health risks. Additionally, improperly treated sewage can contaminate rivers and groundwater. He expressed hope that through this tour, village and neighborhood chiefs could help promote the benefits of connecting household pipelines to sanitary sewers, contributing to Taichung’s development as a modern city. The city government also plans to strengthen its public outreach to raise public awareness of the benefits of sanitary sewers and accelerate household sewer connections.
