In support of the Taichung City Government’s “Each River Guarded by A University” initiative, more than 20 residents and staff members from Pingtung Christian Bethany Home participated today (16th) in the “Lyuchuan Canal Adventure” ecological guided tour organized by National Chung Hsing University. The event offered participants a firsthand experience of the transformed ecological and cultural landscape of Lyuchuan Canal following its revitalization. Deputy Director Han Nai-Bin of the Water Resources Bureau was also present to welcome the participants. Deputy Director Han noted that the revitalization of Lyuchuan Canal has not only enhanced the city’s aesthetics but also established a model site for environmental education. He was particularly moved by the barrier-free design of the area, which enables individuals with disabilities—such as the those from Pingtung Christian Bethany Home—to enjoy the river with ease, embodying the core value of Lyuchuan Canal as an “accessible river for all.”
According to the Taichung City Government’s Water Resources Bureau, Lyuchuan Canal is one of Taichung’s most iconic waterways, carrying with it a rich historical legacy. Guided by the core principles of “water cleanliness, water safety, and water space,” the city government has implemented a phased water environment improvement plan. The National Chung Hsing University section of Liuchuan Canal was completed in 2021 and incorporates the concepts of low-impact development and sponge city design. The project includes sewage interception systems and a reduction in concrete structures, creating a green riverside that harmoniously integrates water accessibility, ecology, landscape, and cultural elements.
In addition, National Chung Hsing University has collaborated with the Taichung City Government to remove sections of its campus walls, creating a seamless connection between the campus and the riverside, thereby expanding green spaces for public enjoyment. This cross-county visit was made possible through the efforts of Aslan Bread of Life Christian Church in Taichung. Not only did the visit provide members of Pingtung Christian Bethany Home with a broader perspective, but it also reflected the compassion and inclusiveness of Taiwanese society toward disadvantaged groups, adding a heartwarming chapter to the promotion of nationwide water environment education.
National Chung Hsing University has been actively engaged in its University Social Responsibility (USR) efforts, including the “Lyuchuan Canal Adventure” project. The project is founded on five key principles: understanding water, connecting with water, protecting water, coexisting with water, and revitalizing water. By offering diverse river-related education, the project aims to deepen public awareness of water environments. Special barrier-free guided tours have been designed for individuals with disabilities, overcoming sensory limitations and allowing those with multiple disabilities to connect with nature and learn about ecology. Also, established in 1963, Pingtung Christian Bethany Home is dedicated to the care of children with cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and multiple impairments. The institution promotes holistic development through individualized education.
