Director of the Water Resources Bureau, Fan Shi-yi, noted that since Mayor Lu Shiow-yen took office in 2019, the city government has actively promoted the Household Pipeline Connection Doubling Project. As of the end of June this year, 137,000 new connections have been added, averaging over 20,000 per year. The total number of connected households has exceeded 310,000, setting a record under any previous mayor. Over the past six years, Taichung’s sewage treatment rate has increased by 26.89%, ranking first among the six municipalities.
Director Fan further explained that while advancing sewage system construction, the city government places great emphasis on construction safety. From the engineering design stage, a risk assessment mechanism is implemented, high-quality contractors are strictly selected, occupational safety and health management is rigorously enforced, and regular on-site inspections are conducted to ensure the safety of construction operations.
The Water Resources Bureau pointed out that confined-space operations carry extremely high risks, with potential hazards including oxygen deficiency, poisoning, or falls. In addition to enhancing professional training for construction personnel, the city government has comprehensively upgraded ventilation systems, gas detection, and fall-prevention equipment to ensure worker safety. This year’s evaluation was jointly organized by the National Land Management Agency of the Ministry of the Interior, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Ministry of Labor, and the Taichung City Government from March 18 to 20. The participating projects covered sections including Lukang Lane 4, Section 3 of Chongde Road, Chongde 10th Road, and Siping Road, ultimately earning Taichung the “Outstanding” rating once again.
The Water Resources Bureau added that the city government appreciates the central government’s recognition of Taichung, which demonstrates its strong commitment to engineering excellence and occupational safety. Moving forward, the city government will continue to refine its efforts to build safe and high-quality urban infrastructure.
