Ankang Lane in Tonglin Village, Wufeng District, suffered slope collapse and road damage due to heavy rain last July. Taichung Mayor Shiow-Yen Lu personally visited the site at the time to inspect the disaster damage and instructed that post-disaster recovery be accelerated across the board. The project was completed on June 10 this year, effectively improving slope stability and disaster resilience. Mayor Lu visited the site again early this weekend morning (June 27) to inspect road use, slope stability, and the operation of drainage facilities. She thanked city government colleagues for their hard work and efforts, and emphasized that the city government will continue flood prevention preparations without letting down its guard.
Mayor Lu said she was especially grateful to city government colleagues for their hard work. Since the day before yesterday, they have carried out 24-hour shift monitoring and simultaneously activated the Level 3 emergency response mechanism. In the face of heavy rainfall from last night into the early hours of today, colleagues stayed up through the night, protected residents’ safety around the clock, and continued to closely review flood prevention conditions across the city.
Mayor Lu stressed that “no household flooding” is the highest standard upheld by the city government team. As rainfall is expected to remain unstable today and tomorrow, she especially urged residents to remain alert, prepare for flood prevention at home, and pay close attention to personal safety when going out.
She also said that, according to weather forecasts, Taiwan’s weather is not expected to gradually stabilize until next Monday. The city government will continue to monitor conditions closely and stay on alert. At the same time, she encouraged grassroots village chiefs to continue exercising the spirit of mutual watch and assistance, carry out inspections, and closely monitor conditions in their jurisdictions. If any abnormalities or disaster situations are found, they should report them immediately so the city government team can respond promptly.
The Water Resources Bureau said that Ankang Lane suffered road slope sliding and collapse as well as pavement damage due to days of heavy rainfall last year, causing traffic to be temporarily interrupted. The city government rushed to the site immediately to carry out emergency repairs. In addition to setting up a temporary access road to maintain basic passage, it also actively sought approximately NT$16 million in post-disaster reconstruction funding from the Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation, Ministry of Agriculture, to accelerate road and slope reconstruction work.
The Water Resources Bureau pointed out that Ankang Lane is an important local farm road, serving residents’ daily travel needs and the transportation of agricultural products. In addition to repairing the damaged road, this reconstruction project also improved slope protection and drainage facilities, strengthening overall disaster resistance. In response to the challenges brought by recent heavy rainfall, the city government will continue to strengthen inspections of hillside areas, flood prevention preparations, and road safety maintenance, while improving disaster resilience on a rolling basis to protect residents’ safety.
Today’s inspection was attended by Taichung Mayor Shiow-Yen Lu; Water Resources Bureau Director Shih-I Fan; Civil Affairs Bureau Director Shih-Wei Wu; Tonglin Village Chief Kuo-An Lin; and Wufeng District Chief Ching-Yung Chang, who were all present to understand the current situation. Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Johnny C. Chiang and City Councilor Po-Hsing Su also sent staff to show their concern.
